Knowledge Agents & AI answers

What are Knowledge Agents and AI answers?
Knowledge Agents are smart, configurable AI assistants that help your team get to the right answer faster. Instead of relying on search results or outdated documentation, Knowledge Agents use generative AI to surface a single, authoritative answer—grounded in the knowledge your team already has.
Agents pull from your company’s content, like connected tools like Google Drive or Notion, content documented natively in Guru, or even public websites—and use natural language processing to understand the question being asked. Then it generates a clear, concise response, citing the exact sources used so your team knows they’re getting an answer they can trust—directly in your team’s existing workflows.
It’s a better way to deliver info: accurate, fast, and embedded directly into the tools your team uses every day.
How it works
Connect structured and unstructured content
Admins configure Knowledge Agents by connecting internal and external sources of content. This includes Guru Cards, synced apps (like Google Drive, SharePoint, Notion, and Slack), and public websites via a public website connector feature. These sources serve as the foundation for AI-generated answers.
Configure Knowledge Agents
Each Knowledge Agent is created with a unique name, avatar, and prompt settings. Admins can define:
- Which sources the Agent can access (all or specific ones)
- Where the Agent can be used (like with specific websites, Slack channels, or a Guru Page)
- Who can manage or interact with it
Agents can be configured to respond differently based on context, and their prompt behavior can be customized and tested before deployment.

Ask a question, get a trusted answer
When a user asks a question, the Agent uses natural language processing to extract search terms and identify relevant content. Guru performs a semantic search across the sources linked to that Agent and sends a targeted set of info to the large language model (LLM).
The LLM uses this context to generate a natural-language response and is returned to the user along with citations from the actual content used, a breakdown of the search terms applied, and Answer Details: an explanation of how the answer was formed.
This approach provides both a fast user experience and the transparency needed to trust every response.

Maintain access control
Access to content is enforced at the user level. Users only see information they’re permissioned to view—even if the Agent is configured with broader source access.
Monitor and iterate
If a returned answer doesn’t seem right, it can be assigned to an expert for review. Admins and subject matter experts can view analytics on usage, identify knowledge gaps (e.g., unanswered or inaccurate questions), and refine source selection, prompt logic, or verification workflows to improve answer quality over time.

Trusted answers, backed by verified content and transparent logic
Guru ensures AI-generated answers are both reliable and explainable. Verified content signals that the information behind an answer is accurate and up to date, giving your team confidence to act.
With Answer Details, users can see exactly how each answer was generated, like what content was used, why it was chosen, and how the response was formed. It’s trust you can see, backed by knowledge you control.

Guru connects to all the apps your team already uses
Guru supports dozens of sources your team already works with—from internal documentation to public help centers. Once connected, these sources are instantly usable by Knowledge Agents to generate accurate answers—with no need to manually migrate or duplicate content.

Use Knowledge Agents anywhere with the API
Guru’s API gives you the flexibility to bring Knowledge Agents into your own tools and workflows, allowing your team to access AI-generated answers even outside the Guru platform.
Let’s say your company has an internal IT help desk portal where employees submit questions or browse support topics. You want employees to get instant answers to common IT questions like “How do I reset my VPN password?” without having to wait for a human response. When a user submits a question, your system sends it to a specific Knowledge Agent via the API. Guru returns a trusted, natural-language answer—sourced from verified content—along with citations. The response can be displayed instantly in your portal, respecting user permissions and providing full transparency. This setup reduces support requests, speeds up resolution time, and gives employees on-demand access to reliable, self-serve knowledge.

Secure, customizable permissions
Guru was built with enterprise-grade security from day one. Access to content is always permission-aware, meaning employees only get answers based on what they’re allowed to see. Knowledge Agents enforce your existing content and role-based access settings—so there’s no risk of exposing sensitive info.
Admins and Knowledge Agent Owners have complete control: they can define which sources are connected, assign roles to users or teams, and monitor activity through detailed analytics and the Training Center.
And when it comes to AI, your content stays yours. Public AI models are never trained using your data, and nothing you share is stored in third-party LLM infrastructure or shared across customers. Period.

FAQs
You’ve got questions, and we’ve got answers.
Answers is still under the umbrella of our existing data security and privacy agreements, and no customer data will be stored with any third-party partners or used to train any third-party models. The data submitted through Answers is automatically deleted by third parties after being processed and is not used for any other purposes by third parties, such as model training.
We do not share any PII out-of-the-box. The only way we would share that information is if a customer explicitly included it in the card content.

Knowledge Agents pull from the specific sources you configure—Guru Cards, Google Drive, Notion, SharePoint, Slack, and more. You can choose to allow all sources or limit each Agent to a curated set to keep answers accurate and relevant.
Yes. You can assign roles like Viewer, Expert, or Agent Owner to individuals or groups. This gives you fine-grained control over who can view, manage, or maintain each Agent without needing to give full admin access.
No. Guru enforces your existing content permissions. Answers are only generated from content the user already has access to, ensuring sensitive or restricted information stays protected.
Users can view the full “Answer Details” to understand how the answer was formed, including the sources and search terms used. Admins and experts can flag issues, refine content, and assign questions for review—all from within Guru.
